Situated between Vienna’s iconic St Stephen’s Cathedral and City Hall, the venue offered a unique blend of tradition and innovation, combining classical beauty with state-of-the-art facilities.The scientific content of the congress was equally outstanding. Topics included the use of artificial intelligence in hearing aids and tinnitus management, innovations in tele-audiology, and advances in cochlear implantation.The congress opened with a focus on the transformative role of artificial intelligence in audiology. Several presentations highlighted the integration of AI into hearing aid technology and tinnitus treatment. Particularly noteworthy was a review outlining AI’s potential to personalise treatment plans and enhance device performance through adaptive algorithms.

Forecasts

GloFAS provides a similar product portfolio as EFAS containing a wide range of early flood forecasting information to support stakeholders with flood risk management duties in arranging preparatory measures before an event strikes. The main difference to EFAS it the coarser spatial and temporal resolution due to the global setup. However, it is an asset to the flood risk management of large trans-national river basins, not least because it is free of charge and open to everyone who registers as a user. As for EFAS, GloFAS provided even estimates and maps of the potential socio-economic impact of flooding events. GloFAS data are freely accessible to all registered users through a dedicated web platform, the GloFAS map viewer.

The Board may co-opt additional members, without voting rights, for specific purposes, e.g. in relation to European Conferences on Audiology, or to help liaise with other organizations. The Board shall be responsible for managing the affairs of EFAS according to the general policy decided by the Committee of Representatives, and take initiatives to promote audiology in Europe. These accounts are to be submitted to the Auditors yearly at least one month before the General Assembly.

European Flood Awareness System

Through EFAS, we are dedicated to bridge this gap by advancing accessible, affordable and sustainable hearing care services for all. The European Foot and Ankle Society (EFAS) underscores that surgical procedures on the foot and ankle should only be performed by medically trained surgeons who are fully accountable for their treatment decisions and outcomes. The unit for soil depth in this case (i.e. using LISFLOOD model for EFAS) should be millimetres (mm).

• Observations are also often taken in different units, such as mm/day, rather than the accumulated metres produced here.Runoff is a measure of the availability of water in the soil, and can, for example, be used as an indicator of drought or flood.
• While they serve similar purposes, there are key differences between the two approaches that make each one unique in its own right.

Any national, regional or local authority that is legally responsible for providing flood forecasting services, or that has a national role in flood risk management within its country and the European Commission Services, can become an EFAS partner. The soil layers information is in the variable soil depth, which gives the depth of the bottom of each layer from the surface. The official documentation (Model Output – Copernicus Emergency Management Service – CEMS – ECMWF Confluence Wiki) gives the units as meters. After selecting to access the EFAS map viewer, the user will be able to access various data and information from the service using the EFAS-IS (Figure 2).

Events

SECRETARY-GENERALThe Secretary-General of EFAS shall be responsible for keeping an updated list of membership and representatives, records of all the activities of EFAS and the Board, and managing the distribution of  information to representatives and members. NAMEThe European Federation of Audiology Societies, EFAS, is a non-profit organization, formed as a federation for national audiology societies in the European countries. Audiology is defined as the science of hearing and the alleviation of the effects of disorders of the auditory system. The countries eligible to be part of EFAS are as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The aim of EFAS  is to support preparatory measures before major flood events strike, particularly in the large trans-national river basins and throughout Europe in general.

Over 1.5 billion people worldwide live with some degree of hearing loss, and this number is expected to rise significantly in the coming decades. In children, hearing loss can delay speech and language development, hinder academic performance and limit social interactions. In older adults, it may lead to social isolation, depression and cognitive decline.

The aims of the society are to promote the development of foot and ankle surgery and to advance education, study and research in this specialty. This dataset was produced by forcing the LISFLOOD hydrological model at a 1×1 arcminute (for version 5.0 onwards) resolution with ensemble meteorological reforecasts from ECMWF. Reforecasts are forecasts run over past dates and are typically used to assess the skill of a forecast system or to develop tools for statistical error correction of the forecasts. The reforecasts are initialised twice weekly with lead times up to 46 days, at 6-hourly time steps for 20 years. For more specific information on the how the reforecast dataset is produced we refer to EFAS medium-range forecast skill. This dataset was produced by forcing the LISFLOOD hydrological model at a 1×1 arcminute (for version 5.0 onwards) resolution with seasonal meteorological ensemble forecasts.

• EFAS Council and the Certification Board have agreed that it would be appropriate to consider awarding an Honorary Certificate to European Foot and Ankle Surgeons of merit.

• Supervised by the experienced EFAS faculty, participants of the courses will practice their techniques on cadavers.

The EFAS Matrix focuses primarily on external factors, providing insights into the broader business environment and helping organizations anticipate market changes. In contrast, SWOT Analysis considers both internal and external factors, offering a more holistic view of an organization’s current situation and future prospects. SWOT Analysis, which stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats, is a strategic planning tool that helps organizations assess both internal and external factors. It is a comprehensive framework that allows companies to identify their internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats. By analyzing these factors, organizations can develop strategies that leverage their strengths and opportunities while mitigating their weaknesses and threats.

The approach in 3 phases – theorical presentation, faculty demonstration, and practical work – is similar to basic course. The participants work with fresh cadaver specimens, all tested and with all safety guarantees. The chronology below gives a historical perspective as well as a glimpse into the future of the EFA Annual Meeting locations, hosts and chairs over the years (including links to conference websites, if available). We have come a long way from where we started and today, EFAS represents 28 national societies and around surgeons in Europe.

EFAS Congress

In addition, detailed forecasts are also available at stations where the national services are providing river discharge data. More than 900 registered users from 70 hydrological services and civil protection services in Europe are part of the EFAS network, whilst GloFAS has over 6000 registered users. Volumetric soil moisture and river discharge data are accompanied by Auxiliary Data for interpretation.

Once your registration documents are submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. Your application will then reviewed by the EFAS Council during the face-to-face meeting (usually taking place 3 times a year around January, June and at the time of the Annual Meeting). If your application meets the membership criteria, the Council will suggest it for full ratification by the General Assembly during annual meeting. I would also like to acknowledge Prof. Georg Sprinzl and his outstanding team for the excellent coordination and organization of the 17th EFAS Congress in Vienna. Furthermore, I look forward to working closely with Dr. Tobias Neher to organize the 18th EFAS congress in Odense, Denmark, in 2027. Known issues include, but are not limited to, forecast issues, production incidents, and data quality deterioration. During the second session titled «Pearls of Wisdom,» senior surgeons would share their journeys and experience. The 3rd session would be an interactive case-based discussion session so that everyone can learn something from it.

EFA Annual Meeting and Calendar

Some of the applications that use soil depth are archived in MARS with the unit meters (m), but this is not the case for LISFLOOD soil depth which is used in EFAS and is measured in millimetres (mm). We specialise in delivering tailor-made training courses to any industry, anywhere in the UK. We have training centres around the country which we use to deliver a variety of courses every month for anyone to come along and learn life saving skills. To that end we organise the structure and content of the EFAS Instructional Courses, normally held three to four times a year at a variety of locations across Europe. We provide a core faculty for these courses but are also committed to working alongside local faculty colleagues. These shall be determined by the examination board in conjunction with the Honorary Treasurer.

An email containing the voting link will be sent to the email address used for registration at the commencement of the General Assembly. EFAS v4.8 integrates changes in its meteorological forcing with the use of the new version of the ECMWF-ENS ensemble forecasting system, introduced by IFS cycle 48r1. The error in the computation of the initial conditions of EFAS version 5 forecasts has been corrected. Once the candidate has satisfied the examiners and examination board, a pass and Certificate shall be awarded by EFAS. The format will be a 1 hour multiple choice questionnaire comprising 50 questions with five options.

EFAS variables (called ‘parameters’ in ECMWF MARS) are the hydrological entities calculated by the modelling chain. This page describes the model output data (either direct output or processed) available from EFAS and GloFAS. A technical issue linked with the processing of SYNOP data at ECMWF has impacted the quality of the SYNOP layer shown on EFAS. This does not have any impact on the EFAS service which does not use the data stream used in the SYNOP layer. This will comprise evidence-based practice and technical tips including videos of surgical techniques. It seems we attempted to describe soil depth as a grib parameter (as it is used in multiple in-house applications) on this documentation page.

The visitor might want to gain experience in general foot and ankle surgery, if the visitor is young or less experienced. In other cases, the visitor might want to gain experience in highly specialized procedures in a high volume center with experienced surgeons. Through this collaborative approach, we can share knowledge, respect our differences and work towards unified goals in hearing healthcare. Education is the foundation for strong academic and clinical excellence in audiology. One of the visions for EFAS during my presidency is to enhance the visibility and understanding of the structure of audiology education across various universities in Europe.

The European Federation of Autonomic Societies (EFAS) is an umbrella society founded in 1997 in London, UK.EFAS hosts national autonomic societies (NAS), societies not exclusively specialised in autonomic nervous system research and private persons. The aim is to establish a platform for scientists and clinicians with interests in ANS physiology, disorders and treatment. To promote the interdisciplinary communication a congress is organised by another NAS every year.

Therefore, data previously downloaded using the sub-setting tool should be disregarded and users should download the dataset of interest again over the full EFAS domain. But when I upload the netCDF file in Python using xarray and actually check it, the soil depth for layer 1 goes till 50 meters, and the soil depth for layer 2 goes till 1400 m (1.4 km !!!). This does not seem realistic, as I have never seen a hydrological model or a land surface model working with these high depths of soil, unless the focus is on the deep layers. While many foot problems can be treated non-surgically, not all problems will improve and some will require an operation. Surgery often involves the repair of damage to the foot or ankle which may have occurred to bone, muscle, tendon, nerve, other soft tissue (such as ligaments), skin and nails.

Discussions centred on electrode design, surgical techniques, and patient-reported outcomes, reflecting a growing emphasis on personalised medicine in implantable hearing technologies. The DEFINE study, presented in the opening session, provided compelling evidence that digital cognitive behavioural therapy can be as effective as traditional face-to-face approaches in managing tinnitus-related distress. Other sessions explored auditory training methods, broadband hearing aid amplification, and innovative tools like the Tinnometer to tailor tinnitus therapies to individual needs.Overall, EFAS 2025 was a remarkable professional and cultural experience. The event once again reinforced the importance of evidence-based practice, technological integration, and patient-centred care in shaping the future of hearing healthcare. The combination of cutting-edge audiological science, meaningful professional connections, and the magnificent setting of Vienna made this congress truly memorable.

Once a candidate has been accepted for examination the following process will occur, preceding the biennial meeting or advanced instructional course. With this in mind, EFAS has developed for several years a program of travelling fellowships which has been a success and that we intend to expand as soon as the epidemic situation permits. In addition, we are starting, conditioned buy the sanitary situation, a project for Research Fellowships where the Fellow will spend some months on a select Research Centre and develop a project on the Foot and Ankle field. In accordance with Practice Direction No. 17 of 2020 you are required to register that you are acting in cases via EFAS. You must make adjournment requests and hearing requests for all summary criminal matters using the EFAS portal.
